I never planned to write this song.
For months, I convinced myself I wasn’t ready. Every time I sat down with in the studio with my producer, the words wouldn’t come. The emotions were too heavy. The memories too fresh. I told myself, “One day. When it hurts less. When I can sing it without breaking.”
But grief doesn’t wait for the right moment. And love doesn’t ask for permission.
Kotobaabi was where everything started. The sun was setting over the red earth—the same earth my mother, Mina Appiah, walked on every single day of her life. I was sitting alone, thinking about her. The way she laughed. The way she prayed. The way she worked herself to the bone just to put food on the table, a roof over our heads, and hope in our hearts.
And then, like a whisper from somewhere beyond, the melody came.
Not a sad one. Not a mournful one. A reggae rhythm. Bouncy. Warm. Full of life. Because that’s who she was. That’s how she taught me to be—always moving forward, always finding joy, even when things were hard.
I grabbed my phone and started recording. The words poured out like water from a broken dam. “From Kotobaabi where the sunrise glow, Mama you raised me, you helped me grow…”
Two hours later, the song was done.
I sat there in the silence, tears streaming down my face. But I was smiling. Because for the first time since she left, I felt her close. I felt her proud. I felt her singing through me.
“MAMA MINA” was born.
And now, I’m about to share it with the world.
Not because I’m ready. But because her story deserves to be heard. Her love deserves to be felt. And every person who has ever lost someone they love deserves to know—you are not alone.
So mark your calendars. Charge your speakers. And get your heart ready.
